Was it...

an overcast day by any chance? Those kind of days are hard for me to get enough light to avoid the 'blurs':o) 1/250 is pretty slow to handhold this lense, even with a monopod....This is a fun shot to get, we don't have this species around here...:o)

I like the color and depth of field. I would suggest cropping a little off the right side to move the bird to the right and maybe crop a little off the left but leave more room there as the bird is looking in that direction. I agree it is somewhat soft.

Thanks for the comments, I've had another play cropped it, tweaked the contrast and played with sharpness and it has given it more life.
