This is more like a digital darkroom excersize than an artistic attempt, but nevertheless...

Being deeply disappointed by Gimp (Linux image manipulation tool, www.gimp.org) and the way what it does to the pictures, as some might remember my previous attempts, I decided to give it another chance.

So, this is what I did:

  • Converted orf to 100% quality jpg using Bibble, exposure comp. by +0.5 EV or so.
  • Resized in Gimp to 800px width (slightly cropped to get 3/2'ish ratio), cubic interpolation (default is linear)
  • USM 2.5/0.30/0.0 (default is just terrible, 5.0/0.30/0.0)
  • Saved as 95% quality JPG

The picture shows the overall colors and atmosphere as they really were at the time it was taken, or at least on my laptop it looks so :-)

It is quite hard to get satisfying postprocessing results on Linux, as there is no easy monitor calibration tool, gimp is buggy (more on this on request :-), etc.

So, what do you think? Any suggestions are more than wellcome!

Davor,

The colour of the snow looks quite good, the shadows seem a bit clipped though. The image itself is not the most exciting one I've seen to be honest.

Independently from technical criteria I like the minimal-art composition.

Thanks, Reinier and Horst.

This picture is actually a ddroom excersize, but after all, some precautions composition-wise have been taken.

Horst, I'm glad you like the minimal-art, as you said. I also prefer minimalistic pictures, although this one could be even more minimalistic.

Regards, Davor
