Battery Life/Capacity.

2004-Oct-25
by Sam Chapman

I've just been looking through my Olly manual, and it doesn't seem to give an indication of how many images for a specific image format you can expect per charge. Seems a bit of an omission to make, as people won't be able to gauge if they have a decent battery or not. Obviously this will depend on temperature, which will be much less in cold conditions.

I usually use either the TIFF 2560x1920 or SHQ 2560x1920 JPEG formats, but not used it enough yet Old habits from being a 'Scrooge' with film! to come to any specific conclusions.

No facts

I read a report about some Sports Photographers being given/loaned E1s as a promo at a motor event (F1?). One comment made was that the battery capacity was 'good' as the chap had gone all day on one battery.

I've filled 3 512Mb cards in a day without any indication from the battery indicator that it was anything other than 'full'.

What I would like is the ability to recharge from a car supply. I do go camping.

I did go to buy a 'spare' battery and declined when I found out the price! I've now been told I can buy a non-Olympus battery to fit, but I haven't tried to do that yet.

Given the cost of digital pictures why not just sit there and take lots & lots of pictures and see what happens?

I can not answer your question with any specific number. But I have shot 1.5 gigs of images in a day (either all SHQ JPEGs, or currently RAW & JPEGs together) and not run out of battery power. Better than that, I go for days to a week without changing the battery and I try to shoot every day. Yes, I have a second battery I carry with me.

Battery Life

I get 500-650 shots (RAW) using the Olympus battery and storing on SanDisk CF cards. Variability in number of exposures seems to depend on how close together the exposures are. I've shot in temperatures ranging from 20F-99F and that doesn't seem to affect battery life for me. I carry two extra Olympus batteries for backup. I have no experience with non Olympus batteries.

Battery life

From my own experience with the Olympus battery, 500-600 shots is common. The biggest drain tasks are running the big LCD paenl for picture review or menu or formatting cards.

300+

I have two Olympus batteries and two clones.

I only rely on getting 300 photos (SHQ) to a battery, but that's because I do extensive chimping -- I rotate photos in camera and look at histograms and show photos to my fellow travellers and so forth.

Yeah, about 300 or so. I allow for this as well as review and histogram checking in certain situations. Sometimes get more. II also

Wow! Dont know what happened there! I have a spare battery too. I think it also depends on the amount of other functions one uses in the camera when out shooting. Having a spare for me is reassuring when out and about.

Sorry Eugene

can you repeat that?

Are there two types?

I just phoned Jessops and the 'standard' battery is £105 which is a big imporvement over the cost a year ago when I found it was a £107, but they've just offered me another Olympus battery for the E1 with a different battery technology for £70. Unfortunately no further info available.

Maybe better maybe not?

Know anything?

Rex Waygood HoF ¤ $ $ at 07:48 EDT on 2005-Aug-18 [Reply]

Well

I'm going to offer to supply Jessops with Olympus batteries! Another search on the web and I can find a Uniross equivalent for £18!!!!

How much did yours cost?

I take between 150 - 600 shots (RAW+SQ, transcend 1GB 45x, kingston elite pro 1GB)) with one charge. with display use (image, histogramm etc.) bought 2 spare no-name batteries just when I received my E-1 last year. each 10 EUR. I keep a 'battery diary' (when loaded, count of loads, how many pics till warning and empty etc.) so I have archieved the batteries vita. can't tell any differences between the origin and the no-names. but the statistics told me that the count of taken pictures has raised from first use till now. and got the impression that it is better to load 3,5 hrs than just 130min.

I am absolutel;y amazed at the price there Rex. I'm pretty sure that I only paid about €70 when I bought my replacement Oly battery over a year ago.

I brought a spare non Oly battery through Ebay, (£11) and I get the impression my non Oly battery actually lasts longer than the original! As for the number of images, its like asking how long is a piece of string, there are so many other factors that can and do drain the battery, auto focus, previewing the image, how many images you delete, if you use histograms, your auto off settings etc. From my experiences and limited knowledge I get the impression that the Oly batteries out last many of the “opposition”. I don't know if thats any help or not?
