You may be asking why Alan and Mario have returned to CafePress for this year's calendar. Well, until recently, we put our faith into another online retailer which came highly recommended by more than one third party. Unfortunately when we received the calendar the other day, the results were less than satisfactory. The images lacked a certain vibrance, contained banding and did not possess the same detail found in last year's CafePress calendar.

That said, the text problem in last year's calendar will have been resolved through our use of preferred fonts.

Cheers!

Well done guys. Looks great. Agree with Doro re monthly selections. Sorry to hear about printing problems with foirst choice. but this looks good anyway.

Agree with Doro 3

And I agree with Doro as well about the combination month-picture. I also think it was a good choice to have Pascal's picture as front page. His picture reminds me of last year's banana leaft picture by Michael (both pictures almost abstract with lots of nice light) and makes the two calendars look the same/same style in a way.

I just ordered one and look forward to receiving it.

I received my T-shirt Monday. Thanks to Michael. :-)

I got my calendar today. I think it looks better than last year’s calendar and some pictures look almost as good as on the monitor. But not all. Especially Samuel Orutsa’s “Night life” looks overworked. Pascal’s “Piscine” is much nicer with more details and colours/nuances on the monitor (but that was expected – a picture like that is difficult on paper).

Some pictures have a cyan/blue cast. Especially Rob’s “The Loners” and Pascal’s “Rails”. Other pictures are much warmer – David’s “Outbuilding” looks brown (with a lot of red in) in the calendar, but greyer/colder on my monitor. The same with Tor’s “Into Sahara…”. (I have viewed the pictures with monitor set to daylight temperature and also set to colder – doesn’t make much difference regarding type of colour cast in the calendar).

I think that Thierry’s “To Bicycle in Saigon” looks better in the calendar than on the monitor (warmer colours and brighter). Jens’ “Puffin – close up” also looks good, but with fewer colours than on the monitor (yellow has become orange on print).

All in all I think the calendar is good and print quality is at least a lot better than what I have got back from the local labs here (but of course not as good as pictures printed with good printers with paper which goes with the printers and paper profiles used).

Thanks Pascal. I know from a previous job I had (making information material like brochures and posters etc) that CMYK has a smaller colour space than RGB. I don’t know much about these things though (I/we didn’t do the work ourselves – we just bought pictures from some, designer services from others and printing from someone else), but every now and then we had to send all material back to the printing offices. We had our own company profile and profile colours. If they printed on a different type of paper than our company profile paper the colours wouldn’t be right. Once we got 1 million brochures with seven different shades of blue – one kind of blue on some, another on others because they had used seven different kinds of paper. The paper looked the same, but colours got different. Once we got duplex prints, which should have been black and white with a hint of red, but they had large blocks of “dripping” red (not very different from the dark “blocks” on Samuel’s picture in the calendar). Luckily for us we could send all brochures back as it was the printing offices tasks to get it all look right. I’m not sure what caused our “dripping red” and the dark “blocks” on Samuel’s picture, David’s brown-red “Outbuilding” and “thick layer” of blue/cyan on the stones on Rob’s picture. Do you think it’s something they have done when post processing or something which has just happened with Cafepress? Would it have been better if we (for future calendars) worked in CMYK (or at least those who have soft ware which makes them able to do so)?

Got mine last week

Slightly disappointed! I recommend that for next year we avoid holes being punched through the images and include the photographer's country of origin for added interest.
