Shots free from manipulation in PS.

Goran Mehanovic ¤ at 06:00 EDT on 2005-Aug-30 [Reply]

Free from manipulation? Why?

All images are manipulated whether on film (film developer and printing on paper) or digital (shot RAW and developed in some program or a JPEG manipulated by the camera's own algorithms). For me there is nothing magic about an uncorrected image unless the photographer is either very lucky, limits their vision to that rare shot where everything is perfect or is very lazy. LOL. So, as my professor asked many years ago when as students came up with similar statements, "explain yourself". Photographers have used their chosen medium forever to create a great image by hand, which is manipulation by definition.

LOL...

i don't know why, but Goran's comment made me laugh...i don't want that to sound offensive...it's just that i finished looking at the pictures michael linked to (especially Matt's image) and Goran's quick response was classic. LOL. i don't have any personal preferences as to manipulation or not..i love to manipulate but i also envy those members who consistently create wonderful images straight out of the cam.

i will have to spend some free time in the next couple of days searching for some of the images i would like to see in the calendar and compile a list as michael has done. maybe we will have to target some of these members via e-mail like what was done last year to ensure they are submitted for the competition.

BTW, how are you guys embedding links within your text like michael had done above? i know i saw some instructions around here in the past but i can't seem to track them down..

best, john

as Edwin says

Even if you shoot in-camera JPGs and make no modifications to them afterwards, you still have to decide on the camera settings - do only photos taken with the lowest sharpening setting count as "free from manipulation"?

I'll have to think about photos for the calendar - there are so many good ones (though I think there are some superb photos that aren't good choices for a calendar, too).

Manipulation Factor

Well you all know how I feel about manipulation... I think that variety in the calender is going to be the exciting thing to me. Images that contrast and complient each other I like seeing some thing that is very digital and urban agaist something very traditional and rural. With its many members I dont think there is any lack of good content. As far as sticking up for digital looking images... I like it and think it would look good in print as its a new form of art as is somewhat eye catching.

bump!

what's up? no favorites? no ideas?
seems there is less interest in the calendar this year. or is it just everyone is working on super special high quality images and nominations were just unwanted competitors...?

I have just discovered one disadvantage with not rating pictures Ė I canít find those pictures I know I would like to see in the calendar. Canít remember who took them. Iíve found a few, but they have the wrong format (portrait format). :-(

Sorry, but..

.. I still don't understand what is happening...Do we nominate pictures that then get entered into the competition by the nominees, or do we submit our own, new pictures?

Best wishes- Andy

Andy Ė we are just trying to persuade people to post our favourites. :-) As far as I have understood you can do whatever you like Ė submit a picture you have posted on MFT before or a new picture. Submit pictures of your own choice or pictures others have tried to persuade you to post.

Edwin: Thanks! :-) I would like to see this http://www.myfourthirds.com/document.php?id=5190 in the calendar. Despite having seen 25+ portraits of you, I still think the cat looks like you. :-)

I would personaly also like to see this image included regardless of the landscape orientation requirement. It is quite possibly the most personal and intimate image yet posted to this site.

hope the links work!!

All the best

PS - there are hardly any images in the competition folder!! Come on you guys (who haven't put anything in).

Currently there's about a 50% chance of getting an image in, which will make getting in there a bit of a hollow victory.

There's 1000's of images on this site!! Get some in

OK. only a few days left to submit images and I'm still struggling with my decisions. I'm sure I'm not the only one. the suggestions are good. but if u can imagine I've also some nice unpublished. unfortunately we only can submit two images... ;)

michael hoefner HoF Win ¤ $ at 12:16 EDT on 2005-Sep-21 [Reply]

Let's get them in!

If you really want to see some of these images in the calendar competition, e-mail the original photographer and let them know directly. It may just be enough inspiration to get them to post!

Thanks for showing such interest everyone! Alan and Mario

Alan and Mario at 01:19 EDT on 2005-Sep-22 [Reply]

What a great evening

I decided that I would do what Alan & Mario had suggested and email a few folk who had produced images that had impressed me through 2005 and had produced them in the correct format for the calendar (I did love some square ones, so I squeezed those in!)

So I went to my ratings page and clicked on all those I had given 10 to and 'revisited' them. Oh what a fantastic evening re-living the enjoyment of some of those images.

I also noticed that a high proportion of my 10s were given to B&W and although I knew I loved B&W I had not realised how much!

I was a bit upset that some of my favourite photographers were missing but it tended to be due to format problems. I think also that I went through a period after one of the periodic 'scoring' debates of not giving 10s so that probably means I should have gone through the 9s, perhaps I'll do that tonight!

I hope I got the emails right and nobody has received an email from me asking them to publish someone elseís picture! The curse of cut and paste!

Anyway whatever the outcome I really enjoyed re-visiting those images and it brought home how high the calibre of work is on this site.

Thank you to my 10s!

curious that most of the members suggestions about images which I could submit are also b/w images. perhaps we should split the competition into two: one color and one b/w calendar...
BTW @Alan&Mario: will the calendar be printed by 'cafepress' again? the 'typeworks' of the last calendar lacks a bit of quality.
BTW @ all: everyone should review other members image folders from time to time. there are so much great images not enough noticed, commented or appreciated. worth to explore...

michael hoefner HoF Win ¤ $1 at 04:40 EDT on 2005-Sep-24 [Reply]

Oh Dear

what a dilemma!

The results of my emails seem to have prompted a few of my '10 scores' to now appear in the competition to an extent that I am now 'spoilt for choice'. Plus those have been added to what was already becoming an excellent collection.

So it looks like me and about three other MFT members will be the ones who choose the calendar, given that so many regulars have given up on scoring.

I'm quiet looking forward to hanging up my choice on the wall!

:-)

As a non-scorer...

Rex, as a normally non-scoring member, I will score for this competition as it is important to the site and to the members. So hopefully there will be a good deal of participation on this one...there are certainly some wonderful entries so far. It will be difficult at best.

Michael's Question

This year we will not be returning our business to cafepress and in fact we are presently evaluating a variety of online vendors to print a larger sized calendar. Thanks for the question.

If anyone has any suggestions to offer regarding an online vendor with the ability to print calendars, we'd be happy to hear them.

Thanks everyone! Good luck! We are certainly happy to see so many stunning entries in this year's competition...

.*lol* Yes, you have a comparative advantage to those of us who stopped rating pictures and canít find and "lobby" for our favourites Rex. But if just everyone vote the same way as I will do I will be more than happy with the 2006 Calendar. Lots of good stuff to choose from this year. :-)

Doro! You were too quick and you got here with what I wanted to say! I agree. How on earth am I going to make my selection for 13 images. I will say now that there are no losers in this competition. To me, everyone is a winner. The standard is great. I am proud to be a member of this site.

Yes. Alan and Mario did ask us to consider submitting landscape oriented images as they are better suited to a calander from their point of view. I will be voting according to the guidelines and their request. If they amend the request/rules then I will bear that in mind too.

which to choose? all those great images ... it's a pity that only 13 will be included in the calendar...
hope all who are taking part (and also those not taking part) will also vote.
